We perform health testing on all of our breeding dogs, with the minimum testing including: hip dysplasia, and elbow dysplasia through OFA and PennHip, as well as vaginal hyperplasia.
Our puppies are raised in our home and receive daily socialization with adults and children as well as other dogs and animals. We work hard on desensitizing them to new sites, sounds and smells so they can adapt to new environments easier. Kennel and potty training are also initiated while in our care.
Our puppies are fed a high-quality food: Purina ProPlan Large Breed Puppy Food to ensure they receive the proper nutrition during their critical growing months.
Boerboels are working dogs; they were initially bred for property and family protection. It is important to remember that guarding instincts are bred into them, that is their purpose. They will lay down their life for their family if needed. This also means they can be territorial of their family and property, so socializing is extremely important!
Because of their guardian instincts, it also means they can display dominant behavior. The leader of the pack is the protector, so they will attempt to show their dominance over anyone, human or animal, they meet if it is allowed to happen. This means it is very important to establish yourself as the pack leader when you introduce a Boerboel into your family. If you do not do this, they will walk all over you. If you do not think you can be the pack leader, or are afraid of dominant dogs, then you may need to reconsider your desire to own a Boerboel.
Boerboels are also very loyal to their pack leader and their family, and will need you to show them when it is acceptable for strangers to approach or enter your home. Remember, you are the pack leader, and have to act accordingly. They are also one the most intelligent, and stubborn, dog breeds I have worked with! They pick up on things very easily, but just may not do what you ask of them if they don't feel like it, so be prepared!
